We are Advent People! We are hopeful despite the injustices we see in our world. With God's help we strive to live lives of nonviolence. The first delegation of Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood went to Fort Benning, Georgia over sixteen years ago. The weekend of Nov. 18-20, 2011 Sisters of St. Joseph again joined thousands of activists to take a stand for justice and nonviolence by participating in the sacred pilgrimage and vigil to close the SOA/WHINSEC. CSJs participate annually in this action to stand in solidarity with the people of Latin America who have suffered atrocities and human rights abuses at the hands of officers trained at the SOA/WHINSEC. The killings of Archbishop Romero, US Churchwomen, the Jesuits, their housekeeper and daughter, and many, many poor people working for peace and justice are all attributed to SOA trained militia. Those atrocities continue today in Colombia, Honduras, Mexico and other countries.
The weekend is filled with workshops, films, concerts, liturgies, and stories of oppression and hope. The experience of the solemn funeral procession to commemorate the victims killed is truly a contemplative experience. Many CSJs and associates, family members, co-ministers, and students join us in prayer during the weekend. There is great hope this year as HR Bill 3368 has been introduced in Congress calling for the closure of the SOA. Join us by taking action in support of this bill...Shut it Down!
Nancy Fackner, CSJ
